Location: Houston, TX
We are seeking a Substance Abuse Counselor, LCDC to provide counseling, treatment planning, and recovery support within a behavioral health treatment setting. This position is a full-time, direct hire opportunity.
This role is ideal for a credentialed counselor who is passionate about long-term recovery outcomes and wants to work in a structured, clinically focused environment. The ideal candidate is comfortable facilitating group sessions, building therapeutic rapport quickly, and helping clients develop the skills, support systems, and relapse prevention strategies needed to sustain recovery beyond treatment.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct biopsychosocial intake assessments covering substance use, mental health history, trauma history, and social determinants of health
- Develop and update individualized treatment plans with measurable goals, timelines, and clinical interventions
- Facilitate group therapy sessions focused on relapse prevention, coping skills, anger management, grief, family systems, and recovery support
- Provide individual counseling using evidence-based approaches such as Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Matrix Model techniques
- Complete clinical documentation including intake assessments, progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries
- Monitor client attendance, engagement, and progress while supporting appropriate level-of-care recommendations
- Coordinate referrals to medical detox, residential treatment, sober living, psychiatric services, and peer support resources
- Develop relapse prevention plans with clients, including triggers, coping strategies, and recovery support linkage
- Facilitate family education and counseling sessions to support communication, boundaries, and recovery engagement
Qualifications:
- Active LCDC credential through the Texas State Board required; LCDC-I with an approved supervision plan may be considered
- Minimum of 2 years of counseling experience in IOP, PHP, outpatient, or substance use disorder treatment settings preferred
- Experience using Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Matrix Model, or related evidence-based approaches preferred
- Knowledge of biopsychosocial assessments, ASAM level-of-care criteria, individualized treatment planning, and clinical documentation standards
- Experience with behavioral health EHR platforms such as Kipu, TheraNest, Valant, or similar systems preferred
- Understanding of Texas behavioral health regulations, CARF, Joint Commission standards, and HIPAA compliance requirements
- Strong group facilitation, communication, documentation, and client engagement skills
Schedule:
- Full-time position
- Onsite in Houston, TX
- Monday through Friday schedule
- Day and evening availability required to support IOP programming
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is approximately $42,000 – $58,000 annually ($20.19 – $27.88 per hour), based on experience and qualifications.
